Ashok Subramaniam Chairperson
As the Founder/Chairperson, my responsibilities are in making sure that the organization is functioning in accordance to the vision and mission for which it was started. Be the bridge between the outside arts community and the organization.
As a musician and a teacher of music in the Bay area, I have been running Gandharva Vidya Center, a South Indian Classical music school for the last twenty two years with over 100 students that I teach on a weekly basis. I have been involved in various community activities and organizations that promote art and culture and have been an advisor to an existing 501(C) dance foundation based in the Bay area, after serving as its Chairperson for several years.
After serving in the engineering and software industry in the Bay Area, for more than 30 years, I have been involved in social and cultural activities. Apart from Music, I have been active in writing, poetry and dramatics. As a graduate of Physics and Electrical Engineering, I have keen interest in Astronomy and emerging technologies.
Shiva Gurumurthy President
As President, my responsibilities include monitoring the goals of the organization, appointing committee members, delegating tasks as necessary, supporting the work of other committee members, and maintaining communication with the community.
I am extremely honored to serve as the president of ASFA, a non-profit organization with a great cause that’s close to my heart. I am currently working as Business development executive at AMD, have a strong background in sports administration, having served in the executive committee of Santa Clara cricket club and the parent Northern california cricket association for many years. I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by musicians all these years, and am a avid listener of Carnatic music in particular ever since my daughter started learning. The nuances, the grace, the spirituality and the variety of Carnatic music have drawn me deeper into this ocean and it is great honor to get the opportunity to serve its community and practictioners in the any which way I can.
Kesav Viswanadha, Vice President of Internet Assets
As the VP of Internet Assets, my responsibilities involve mainly managing the online presence of Adi Sankara Fine Arts. This includes uploading content to the YouTube channel and Facebook page, as well as coordinating virtual event logistics with performers. I am also responsible for maintaining the website and working with the VP of Marketing to keep all information about ASFA up to date.
I am honored to be part of Adi Sankara Fine Arts and spread my passion for the South Indian performing arts. I have been a student of Carnatic vocal music with Sri. Ashok Subramaniam since the age of 4, and have recently been receiving additional training from Smt. Ananya Ashok. I have been giving concerts around the Bay Area as well as in Chennai for many years. I am currently finishing my master’s in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley, where I am a member of a South Asian classical music group called Laya of Berkeley. Outside of music, I am an International Master of chess and in my free time I enjoy video games, sitcoms, and exploring my surroundings.
Ajay Gopi Vice President of Artist Relations
As the VP of Artist Relations, my responsibilities include helping organizing and running musical events conducted by ASFA, nurturing connections with artists, and maintaining relations with the external musical community.
As an avid Carnatic musician and rasika (listener), I am glad to have joined Adi Sankara Fine Arts to help grow the music community. I have learned mrudangam (south indian percussion) and vocal music (Carnatic vocal) and regularly perform in local events as well as in Chennai during the December Music Season. I have been involved in many community activities involving Indian music such as Laya of Berkeley at my college as well as RAGAN, both organizations with goals to nurture and spread Indian classical arts.
Outside of music, I currently work as a software engineer in the Bay Area and enjoy watching sports, reading action comics, and spending time in nature.
Shashank Mahesh Secretary
As the ASFA secretary, my responsibilities include coming up with a meeting agenda and distributing it to the board, and keeping a formal record of the meeting dates and the meeting minutes for each meeting.
I am very glad to have joined Adi Sankara Fine Arts, and I enjoy being a part of this young organization because of the noble mission of ASFA. I have been learning South Indian Classical music for the past 14 years, and give concerts regularly in the Bay Area as well as in Chennai. As an aspiring performer, it gives me immense happiness to host both budding and senior artists.
Aside from music, I am currently a sophomore studying Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Some of my hobbies include playing football, video games, and participating in hackathons.
I am very glad to have joined Adi Sankara Fine Arts, and I enjoy being a part of this young organization because of the noble mission of ASFA.
